Raz de Sein

Another diesel doddle.

Timed our departure to arrive bang on slack water and admire the brave souls tacking their way up through the Raz. A long day punctuated by wind changes to keep anything worth sailing in right on the nose or otherwise BF2 or less. Skipper even got out his new fishing tackle – no luck with that either. Relief arrived in the form of a pod? of dolphins in the Baie d’Audierne, an experience the whole crew were able to enjoy.Starred Photos4

Chenal du Four

The Chenal du Four was an altogether chilled-out affair, after our brief sojourn in l’Aber-Wrac’h, with calm demeanours and still calmer winds and waters.

Camaret

Picture postcard with decaying hulks of old fishing vessels, mini-cairns along the quai, pretty waterfront of crêperies, painted houses and bars with the odd simple stage for summer evening entertainment, changeable weather, not least a beach for young cooped-up legs to stretch out on.

But Camaret somehow flattered to deceive, with not-quite-as-good-as-we-expect crêpes from “the best crêperie in town”, little in the way of chandlery, and a marina shower block that made you want to turn straight back to the boat as soon as you entered (we did just that!). Perhaps it was just the torrential rain … or finishing our stock of Walkers crisps (I think we might need an airdrop)?

Still a great alternative to Brest in between the Chenal du Four and the Raz de Sein.

Guernsey – Skipper’s birthday

The number of times we’ve visited St. Peter Port reflects our fondness for this location. City centre location belies the not-so-great shopping but it offers a counter-point to French fare and we always enjoy ourselves here, this time at the (very) shallow end of the marina filling up on Marmite from M&S as the port filled up like a French Atlantic port before a storm – we were rafted four deep on the night before we left for Brittany.

Our discovery of the new skate park up on the hill overlooking the town – by skater son #2’s account the best skate park he’s ever visited – was the proverbial icing on this visit.

Skipper’s birthday was celebrated in traditional fashion (balloons, cake and singing), with his present exactly what is required to make a Dad happy (it doesn’t take much!).

Pitstop in L’Aber-Wrac’h

We allowed ourselves a peaceful pit-stop in l’Aber-Wrac’h in becalmed conditions to wait for the tide to turn (the Chenal du Four demands the best conditions) and to wash some linen (after an accident overnight – it can take a while for the crew to acquire their sea-legs).

No question of any harbour dues for our four-hour stay. Much more enjoyable than our last visit when Skipper almost had his clothes etc. stolen by opportunists during his ablutions in the marina showers.

James in South Brittany

Hey guys.

I’m having a wonderful time – let me tell you why. On the way here (South Brittany) we saw a few dolphins, we went to the beach a couple of days ago, we went to a friend’s house and they had a massive garden and we got to drink cider!!!
Best of all was the skate park in Guernsey – brand new and the best I’ve been to yet. Here’s a photo:

SkateGuern

I hope you guys are also having a great time.
Another update will come soon (maybe in French?).
If you are reading this please do tell some of my other friends.

Butterflies in my tummy

I’m nervous because we are going to attempt to start our crossing of the Bay of Biscay tomorrow morning and it will be the longest trip until we cross the Atlantic. The trip to Spain should take approximately 3 days. We don’t know yet exactly where in Spain but we will see depending on the weather. We are going to the chandlery a lot so it might be more than I expected.

Daisy

Hi guys!
We saw dolphins – 20 dark grey dolphins just to be sure and 1 dolphin came to swim next to us.
Oh, and, by the way, who knows who is Elsa’s boyfriend?
Jack Frost!
Bye!
