Arrived in Gran Canaria (by Hugo)

So, after Baiona we went to Porto, famous for its Port, a type of fortified wine popularised by the British, personally I didn’t find it interesting, but I loved the ginormous soft whip, and the torture exhibition we went to the next day was horrifying, deathly and fascinating.

After that we arrived at Figueira da Foz where we got stuck for 1 .5 weeks.

Next we went to Péniche which was more of a checkpoint than a destination because I didn’t get off the boat and nor did Daisy, and then on to Cascais.

Once we’d installed new batteries we crossed to Oeiras which had a brilliant swimming pool which I believe is pretty rare in marinas. There were also diving boards at 3m high, 5m high and 7m high (we think) we stayed there for 5 days.

Then we did a gruesome 5 day sail with no warm-up to the Canary Islands, where  we arrived day before yesterday in Las Palmas. Las Palmas is also the place from where we will depart to cross the Atlantic. Just to give you an idea of where we are, it’s west of central Morocco.

Yuck! Not sure about the beach … better try the swimming pool

Jellyfish all over the marina and the neighbouring beach – one downside of the warmer water at this latitude.

Lucky for us, Oeiras marina has it all taken care of – with its mahoosive salt water swimming pool exclusively for the use of marina members and guests. Or in this case, just us, it seems (not sure where the members are and not many guests about for that matter).
After Atlantic kept us out of the water on the beach for much of our time in Figueira, we’re making the most of this.

Under way (finally) and bon anniversaire, Skippette

Once again in convoy with Windfall and Captain Do’Too, we motored to Peniche to celebrate Skippette’s birthday with Taittinger, Douro, massive côte de boeuf and Windfall cupcakes for the candles.

IMG_1810IMG_1833

The following morning it was on to Cascais (still in convoy but with Spray, a Swedish ARC participant, making up a fourth member), when for the first time in weeks we could switch off the engine and enjoy a few hours of talking to another without raised voices, albeit bracketed by dark clouds, lightning and rain, both on departure and arrival in Cascais.

IMG_9966-001 IMG_9965 IMG_1851IMG_9894IMG_9962 IMG_1877 IMG_1871 IMG_1857

The big difference was the glorious sailing conditions enjoyed for two whole hours (!) down past a headland, culminating in one reef in BF5 before the wind died beyond the promontory – somehow the northerlies staying too far offshore for our needs.

A swarm of jellyfish on the way into Cascais kept the boys entertained for the final stretch. No swimming! No change there then.

Ready … steady …

Old sailor’s complaint: either too much wind or not enough wind. Sunshine brought our return to the beach, flying kites and playing on (and off) sand cliffs newly carved out by the breaking seas (no swimming, no flag let alone a red one, life guards not even turning up with big breakers keeping us out of the water), as the weather finally relented and we looked forward to leaving Figueira, albeit in imperfect conditions.

Stuck with bad wind (by Hugo)

Hi everyone I am now in Portugal, Figuera da Foz. So now let me tell you how I
arrived here: first we went to a port at Portosin it wasn’t very interesting, next we went to an anchorage named Islas Cies and according to the Guardian
it was the most beautiful beach in the world. Well he’s mad or he was being sarcastic when he said that or it’s just that he’s been to dumps which have had a sign that says beach!

This is the beach of Islas Cies.

But the island itself was interesting because we went on a long walk, we found lizards and there was a camping site. Next we went to another anchorage at Baiona which
was next door to the port of Baiona.

Baiona is also where Cristopher Columbus
ended up after coming back from America…

Too wet for some …

RIBs and small motor-boats constitute a handful of seemingly “fair-weather” local boats struggling to cope with (so far) three days of wet and windy weather, and many of their owners have given up on what they describe as an awful summer.

IMG_1238IMG_1235IMG_1230

IMG_1198IMG_1196Conditions here remain atypical (southerlies have prevailed for three weeks where prevailing winds are supposed to be northerly) with heavy rain and 30+ knot winds from the south.

Stronger winds suggest the depression that’s penned us in here may, at last, be on the move. Kite flying on the beach this afternoon, anyone?

Figueira Da Foz, Portugal

Captain Do Too et Windfall.

Cornered in Figueira (da Foz)

We pushed on southwards from Porto to arrive in Figueira da Foz with a poor forecast. Rather than press on to the next port, we chose Figueira to be stuck in.

Dominant depression to the west is just not moving, instead feeding on a high further west, with southerlies for the whole of last week and all of this week – less than ideal conditions to proceed southwards, with significant swell and wind on the nose. No end to these conditions in sight, but we can hope for an improvement in a week or so.

Fig depressionGrib

In the meantime we’re making the most of it, with …

Skateboarding, humongous beach, decent park with playground, good local market / decent supermarkets and even learning some German. We can only wish the marina WiFi was less ropey.

Proper little tourists – Porto

IMG_0670IMG_0061

Portugal is hot! Five degrees warmer than Islas Cíes – with staggering sunsets from the marina, halfway up from the mouth of the estuary to the city centre.

They deliver bread every morning – in direct proportion to the number of crew on board. We like this.

The rain in Spain does not stay mainly on the plain – it seems to fall on the Atlantic coastal resorts for the most part, and Portugal is no different. Heaving it down on our first morning, so a good day for tourism.

Churches (Sé Catedral, Igreja de São Francisco – Gothic Baroque), museums (the latter plus the Instruments of Torture Exhibition, and finishing off with the really very good indeed interactive navigation museum) and shopping punctuated our stroll around town either side of a tourist-trappy lunch on the Ribeira (in fairness one of the least tourist-trappy of the establishments along the tourist trap!).

Priority for day two was a port cellar tour. We all enjoyed Graham’s tour which stepped up as Churchill’s, our initial plan, decided to close their doors to Sunday tourists. The children were all delighted to sample 20% alcohol, even if the adults were less impressed – “champagne taste, beer money”, as the saying goes.
